How Remote Monitoring Can Help Protect Refrigerated Cargo

A refrigeration failure inside a grocery store is expensive. A refrigeration failure inside a trailer carrying temperature-sensitive cargo can be even more difficult because the equipment may be hundreds of miles away when the problem begins.

By the time a driver notices something is wrong, product quality may already have been affected.

That makes refrigerated transportation a particularly strong use case for remote IoT monitoring.

The Problem With Periodic Checks

Cold-chain operations have traditionally depended heavily on set points, scheduled inspections, and measurements taken at particular stages of a journey.

Those checks are useful, but they provide snapshots.

The challenge is maintaining that visibility throughout the route.

A connected product in transportation does not remain attached to one network. Trucks move between cities, rural highways, warehouses, distribution centers, and areas where terrestrial cellular coverage may become inconsistent.

Power can also be constrained, particularly for monitoring devices attached to trailers or cargo that need to continue operating when the tractor is disconnected.

Continuous monitoring also creates useful historical information.

Operators can compare equipment performance across fleets, identify routes associated with recurring temperature excursions, detect refrigeration units that require frequent intervention, and improve maintenance planning.

The key shift is simple: organizations no longer have to wait until a truck reaches its destination to discover what happened along the way.

With remote monitoring, the vehicle and its equipment can report conditions while there is still time to do something about them.
